Side-Eye & Grace’s cover of “Blue in Green” was recorded in November of 2019 during the same, live-off-the-floor session as their debut album, Liminal Spaces. This classic Miles Davis/Bill Evans composition is characterized by a looping, ten bar melody; its unusual phrase length obfuscates formal signposts such as verse and chorus, and its eerily cyclic harmonies flirt gently with a non-linear sense of time. In this delicate arrangement, Kyle Jordan’s guitar chimes gently like the ticking of a cosmic clock while the rest of the quartet spin a sparse and ethereal texture around it, seeking to create a moment of fleeting introspection just deep enough to offer catharsis before it passes.

We initially cut this track from Liminal Spaces as we feared our arrangement was too similar in mood to Chris Pond’s “Tough Love.” We also were caught up in our own anxieties about the recording process, and without even listening back to “Blue in Green” we unanimously agreed that we just did not play well enough on the tune to include it. Thankfully, our audio engineer/producer/dear friend Mike Cassels reached out a few months later, after we had finished with the album, to ask if we wanted to have a listen to “Blue in Green;” we discovered to our surprise and delight that the tune sounded pretty good after all!

2020 and 2021 have been rough. Light finally gleams at the end of the tunnel, but there is still a long way to go and a lot of healing to be done. “Blue in Green” has served as a small piece of catharsis for us; a breath of sweet night air amidst the chaos. We hope it will do the same for you.
